The rarest ecotype of maca, selected during harvest on the Junin Plateau.

Black maca (Lepidium meyenii) accounts for only 5 to 10% of natural harvests in the Andean highlands. Its dark skin, due to a higher concentration of anthocyanins and specific glucosinolates, gives it a chemical profile distinct from that of yellow or red maca. Hand-selected and harvested on the Junin Plateau at an altitude of 4,200 m.

  • 100% organic black maca root powder, selected ecotype
  • 5 to 10% of natural harvests,
  • Glucosinolate and anthocyanin profile distinct from other ecotypes
  • Certified FR-BIO-10, Fair For Life (FFL) certified

Black maca is one of the rarest ecotypes among the various varieties of Lepidium meyenii grown on the Junin Plateau. Its dark to black skin, which gives it its name, results from a naturally higher concentration of anthocyanin pigments in the tuber’s epidermis. Its flesh remains white, like that of other ecotypes, but its overall chemical profile—particularly its composition of glucosinolates and macamides—shows measurable differences compared to yellow or red maca, which has led researchers to study it separately in some of the scientific literature available on the genus Lepidium.

Its relative rarity in natural fields (5 to 10% of harvested tubers) requires manual selection at harvest, which distinguishes this product from blended maca powder. This selection is carried out using traditional methods of Andean producers, within the framework of Fair For Life certification, which guarantees fair and traceable production conditions.

In terms of taste, black maca has a slightly milder and less earthy flavor than yellow maca, with the characteristic malty notes common to all maca ecotypes.

Dietary supplement. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose. This product is not a substitute for a varied, balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.

Directions for Use

Daily Dosage

1 level teaspoon per day, or about 2 g of powder. Do not exceed this daily dose. Black maca has a slightly milder flavor than blended maca, making it particularly easy to incorporate into sweet recipes.

How to Use

Black maca powder mixes easily into cold or lukewarm dishes. Its mild, malty flavor pairs well with:

  • A smoothie made with red or dark berries (blueberries, blackcurrants, cherries), whose anthocyanin pigments echo those of black maca
  • Plain yogurt or cottage cheese with honey
  • Hot plant-based milk (oat, almond, hazelnut) for a black maca latte
  • Stirred into oatmeal with chia seeds
  • In the batter for brownies or a dark chocolate fondant, whose flavors naturally complement the flavor profile of black maca

Storage

Store away from heat, moisture, and direct light in an airtight container once opened. Keep out of reach of children. Best consumed before the date indicated on the package.

Precautions

Not recommended for people with thyroid disorders due to the presence of glucosinolates, which may interfere with thyroid function at high doses. Not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women due to insufficient clinical data. If you are currently undergoing hormone replacement therapy, consult a healthcare professional before regular use. Does not contain caffeine.
