Authorized Claims and Documented Properties
Psyllium (Plantago ovata) is one of the few dietary supplements to have several health claims authorized by the EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) under Regulation (EC) No. 1924/2006. These claims are subject to compliance with the specified daily doses.
Normal bowel function, EFSA-authorized claim
The husk of Plantago ovata seeds helps maintain normal bowel function. This claim is authorized for a minimum dose of 5 g per serving, consumed with a sufficient amount of water. The gel formed by the mucilage in the intestine increases the volume of the stool and facilitates its passage, which supports regular bowel function in both directions: whether bowel transit is too slow or too fast, the gel acts as a natural mechanical regulator.
Maintenance of normal cholesterol levels, EFSA-authorized claim
Psyllium mucilage helps maintain normal blood cholesterol levels. This claim is authorized for a daily dose of 10 to 12 g of psyllium, divided into several doses. The mechanism is mechanical: the gel formed in the small intestine traps some of the bile acids, forcing the body to synthesize new ones from circulating cholesterol, which helps lower LDL cholesterol levels.
Reduction in blood glucose levels after meals, EFSA-authorized claim
Consuming psyllium helps reduce blood glucose levels after meals. This claim is valid for a dose of 10 g of psyllium consumed with a meal. The viscous gel slows gastric emptying and the absorption of carbohydrates in the small intestine, thereby reducing the postprandial blood glucose spike. This property is particularly studied in the context of a diet designed to maintain stable blood glucose levels.
Mucilages: Soluble Fibers with High Absorption Capacity
The arabinoxylans in psyllium account for approximately 70 to 85% of the seed husk’s weight and represent one of the highest concentrations of soluble fiber among known plant sources. By way of comparison, the soluble fiber content of psyllium is about ten times higher than that of oatmeal, which is often cited as a reference for beta-glucans. This high concentration of soluble fiber is the basis for the multiple regulatory recognitions psyllium has received at the European level.
Claims regarding digestive health, cholesterol, and blood sugar are authorized in accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 1924/2006 and are subject to the specified daily doses. Consult a healthcare professional if you have an existing medical condition.

Blond psyllium is derived from the seed husks of Plantago ovata, an annual herbaceous plant grown primarily in the state of Gujarat in India, the world’s leading producer. Indian blond psyllium should not be confused with black psyllium (Plantago psyllium), a distinct species with similar properties but a lower concentration of mucilage. The term “ispaghul” is its traditional French name, derived from Persian and used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine.
Its unique characteristic lies in the nature of its fibers: psyllium mucilages are arabinoxylans, polysaccharides with a high capacity for water absorption. When in contact with water, they absorb up to 40 times their weight in liquid and form a viscous gel in the digestive tract. This gel is responsible for all of psyllium’s documented effects on bowel regularity, blood sugar levels, and cholesterol—all of which are recognized by the EFSA.
This powder is made from 100% Indian blond psyllium seed husks, with no additives, no fillers, and no added flavors.

Instructions for Use
Preparation: Essential Guidelines
Psyllium must be taken with a large amount of water (at least 200 to 250 ml per dose). Never consume psyllium dry or with an insufficient amount of liquid: the mucilage would absorb the water available in the esophagus or intestine, which could cause an obstruction. This precaution is non-negotiable.
Preparation Instructions
- Measure out
the desired dose (1 level tablespoon, approximately 5 g). - Pour
into a large glass of cold or lukewarm water (at least 200 to 250 ml).
Stir quickly. Drink immediately, before a gel forms in the glass.- Drink
a second glass of water to help the gel pass through the digestive tract.
Dosage by Use
To support bowel regularity: 1 tablespoon (about 5 g), 1 to 3 times a day, preferably before meals. To help maintain cholesterol levels and reduce postprandial blood sugar: 2 tablespoons (about 10 g) per day, divided into two or three doses with meals.
Practical Tips
Start with a low dose (1 teaspoon) for the first few days to gradually help your digestive system adjust, then increase to the recommended dose. Some people may experience temporary bloating at the start of the treatment, which usually subsides after a few days of adjustment.
Storage
Store away from heat, moisture, and direct light in an airtight container once opened. Psyllium is highly hygroscopic and quickly absorbs moisture from the air, which can alter its texture and properties. Keep out of reach of children. Best consumed before the date indicated on the package.
Precautions
Never consume without sufficient water (risk of blockage). Not recommended in cases of esophageal narrowing or known intestinal obstruction. If you are currently taking medication, consume psyllium at a separate time from your medication (at least 2 hours before or after), as the mucilage may reduce the absorption of certain active ingredients. Consult a healthcare professional if you have a pre-existing digestive condition or medically treated diabetes.
