Nutritional Composition and Documented Properties

To date, there is no EMA/HMPC monograph for moringa. The information presented below is based on nutritional data available in the scientific literature and on traditional uses documented in the pharmacopoeias of South Asia and Africa. No therapeutic claims are made.

A Leaf with Documented Nutritional Density

The moringa leaf is one of the most extensively analyzed plant materials from a nutritional standpoint. Available compositional studies indicate a significant protein content (approximately 25 to 30% of dry weight), including all eight essential amino acids—a rarity for a plant-based source. The dried leaves also contain B vitamins (B1, B2, B3), vitamin C, vitamin A in the form of beta-carotene, as well as minerals such as calcium, potassium, iron, and magnesium. These nutritional values are based on analyses of dried leaves and may vary depending on growing conditions, the season, and the drying process.

Polyphenols and isothiocyanates: Characteristic Active Compounds

In addition to its nutritional richness, the moringa leaf contains specific phenolic compounds, notably quercetin, kaempferol, and chlorogenic acid, which belong to the flavonoid family and are studied for their antioxidant properties. The plant also contains glucosinolates, precursors to isothiocyanates—sulfur-containing compounds also found in the Brassicaceae family (broccoli, cabbage, watercress)—which are the subject of extensive scientific literature.

Traditional Uses in South Asia and Africa

In Ayurveda, the traditional Indian system of medicine, moringa is known as shigru, and its leaves have been used for centuries for their nutritional and tonic properties. In sub-Saharan Africa, dried and powdered moringa leaves are incorporated into the daily diet in many rural communities, particularly for their micronutrient content in food-insecure settings. These uses are documented by several international organizations, including the FAO.

Aromatic Profile of the Herbal Tea

When brewed, moringa leaves develop mild, slightly earthy herbal notes, without any pronounced bitterness. Its taste is reminiscent of leafy green vegetables (spinach, watercress) with a characteristic, subtle vegetal note. The herbal tea is caffeine-free and can be consumed at any time of day, including in the evening.

Information on nutritional composition is derived from available scientific literature and may vary depending on production conditions. It does not constitute health claims as defined by Regulation (EC) No. 1924/2006.

Moringa is a fast-growing tree native to the tropical regions of the Indian subcontinent, now cultivated in most tropical and subtropical areas around the world, from Vietnam to sub-Saharan Africa. Of the 13 species in the Moringa genus, Moringa oleifera accounts for nearly all documented food and herbal medicinal uses. Every part of the tree is used in local traditions: the leaves, seeds, flowers, and roots each play a specific role in the traditional pharmacopoeias and cuisines of South Asia and Africa.

This herbal tea is made exclusively from dried moringa leaves, certified organic by Ecocert SA, a leading French certification body. Organic certification guarantees the absence of synthetic pesticides and chemical fertilizers in the cultivation and processing.

Directions for Use

Preparation

  1. Heat the water
    Bring to a boil (100°C).
  2. Steeping
Place the tea bag in a cup and pour in the boiling water.
    Let steep for 5 minutes.
  3. Remove the tea bag
    . Enjoy while hot.

Recommended Amount

1 to 3 cups per day, at any time of day. Since it contains no caffeine, this herbal tea can also be enjoyed in the evening.

Serving Suggestions

Moringa can also be enjoyed as an iced tea: prepare the tea hot, let it cool, then store it in the refrigerator. A splash of lemon juice or a few fresh mint leaves help mellow the plant’s natural earthy flavor and make the drink particularly pleasant when served cold.

Storage

Store away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Keep out of reach of children. Best consumed before the date indicated on the package.

Precautions

Does not contain caffeine. Not recommended for pregnant women due to the natural presence of alkaloids in certain parts of the plant (dried leaves have a documented safety profile, but caution is advised in the absence of sufficient clinical data).

If you are currently taking medication, particularly thyroid or blood-sugar-lowering medication, consult a healthcare professional before use.
